Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
